What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a preventative, complementary therapy, and used to help maintain and promote health. You keep your clothes on when receiving Shiatsu.

Shiatsu is a physical therapy which uses a combination of pressure points, gentle manipulation and stretching to re-energize weak areas and reduce tension in the body which are tailored to your individual needs at that moment. 

Shiatsu is given with sensitive, mindful, stable touch using a combination of thumbs, fingers and palms.

Most people find that shiatsu is a relaxing experience and they come for a session to relax, de-stress, and find balance in their lives supporting the body’s own ability to self-heal and promoting a sense of relaxation and well-being.

How can shiatsu help me?

There are so many ways that your body and mind can benefit from Shiatsu Therapy.  There are many symptoms that can be treated effectively with shiatsu. The benefit of getting a shiatsu treatment is that all aspects of your body and mind are taken into account, as quite often these are connected.

Some of the symptoms that can be helped through shiatsu are:

Is shiatsu safe?

Academic research indicates that Shiatsu is safe and can reduce a wide range of symptoms, improving quality of life and reducing dependency on medication. Shiatsu touch, in its stillness, depth and gentle compassion, is able to support you and treatment is based entirely on your needs.

How does it feel to receive a shiatsu treatment?

This is a good question and probably best answered yourself following a treatment. Different types of touch can give different sensations in your body. Sometimes the touch can feel light, and this can give gently awareness to areas that are tight or areas that you previously didn’t have contact with. Pressure can also be more firm and strong if needed. Often I adapt my pressure depending on the need of the client at the time of treatment. I believe that recovery comes best from a relaxed body and shiatsu is an effective way of helping to release tension and pain. 

What do I wear for a shiatsu treatment?

Shiatsu is given through clothes, so is accessible for everyone. Shiatsu therapy is given on a futon at floor level. Please wear something comfortable and especially loose around the waist, like sweatpants and a long sleeve tee-shirt and clean socks if possible.
